This platform allows users to plug two dual-core/quad-core Socket F processors into a single motherboard for a total of four/eight physical cores. This means it is NOT a quad core processor as many mistakenly claim. Each socket utilizes an AMD Athlon 64 FX CPU and is connected via AMD's Direct Connect Architecture providing a dedicated channel between the CPU cores.

The platform is marketed as "4x4" or "quadfather", referring to its quad cores and quad SLI possibility. Its quad SLI option is made possible by combining two chipsets which are needed for the PCI Express lanes. This also results in double the I/O options.
