Catalyst is the name for ATI's driver suite for their Radeon video cards.

The version numbering work like this: year.release. So 6.1 would be the first release in the year 2006. The current release cycle is monthly, this means that there will be Catalyst versions like 6.12. Version 6.12 would be newer than 6.9, it does not mean 6.1.2.
