Windows Server 2003 is Microsoft's latest server operating system. It is very similar to Windows XP Professional in functionality, but has many extra features that are more geared towards a server environment. It has the ability to function as a domain controller, come pre-configured for better memory usage, and doesn't include the Welcome Screen.

Because of Windows Server 2003's slightly better memory usage configuration and some other minor benefits, some enthusiasts like to use it as their desktop OS. There are some problems that can arise from doing this though. Finding drivers for Windows Server 2003 can sometime be a pain. Many drivers will not install, even though they will work just fine because of how similar Server 2003 is to Windows XP. Usually a simple ini file tweak will allow a Windows XP driver to be installed on Server 2003. Another issue is certain programs will not install on Server 2003. Most of the popular anti-virus programs will not run on Server 2003, usually a more expensive server version anti-virus must be purchased.
